When shooting for the eighth unit in youth culture, I chose to focus on party/rave scene, culture, this spans from late 80's, early 90's where disco/techno was a huge scene in partying. The whole shoot is taken in my friends bedroom, all the lighting/smoke machine equipment belongs to him. In this shoot I wanted to once again show the cultural significance of the rave scene.
In this image, it is of my friend as the main subject exhaling smoke, from a vaporized pen, his face is in the top left corner, beams of light are cast on his face, this illuminates parts of his face, the smoke gives a really cool effect against the already smokey room and beams of light that ascend diagonally within the picture, the green colored beams of light contrast really well with the less colourful, more natural yellow which creates a more reflective mood in the lighting. The contrast that the subject has against the light and negative space really creates a good frame of shot. The image seems to effectively represent the stimulation that certain people get from being immersed in lights and loud music, apart from the party atmosphere, the picture also shows the enjoyment that youth can get from being able to operate something that can essentially make people get up and have a good time,
This image was taken my a go-pro contrary to the camera that I normally always use, being the Canon 400D. The camera that I used in a series of images for this shoot, gave a different effect, it gave a fish-eye perspective to the images, which broadened frame and size of what was captured in the image, this is clearly beneficial in capturing the different beams of light and directions that they veer off in. This image captures a head on view from the path of a beam of light, the rays of light disperse and go out to each edge/area of the image, this gives a really cool effect because we see how light separates. The image seems to capture the spirit of the rave/party scene.
Progression: When taking more images for youth culture I want to incorporate more not only things that interest me and are on my subjective vision, but things I know little about and have to go out of my way to shoot and find out about. I feel I have incorporated some of the ideas of artistic preference that I needed to progress from shoot 7.
