Shoot 3 - Work Record

For shoot 3 I decided to take pictures of graffiti in Brighton, as on the weekend I was in Brighton and got the idea of shooting all of the graffiti as it is a massive part of Youth Culture. I was really drawn to taking pictures of it because I'm interested in the appeal of the art, as it is illegal, the reason that mostly young people do it is because of the rebellious nature, the freedom and self-expression of being able to put up their art on a wall and for anyone to see it.

I took this image at exactly the right time as, I managed to show how the wall is 2d and the men that walk past the wall are 3d. They are central to the image and so are the main subject, because they are in the centre of the shot. The painting looks as thought it is legally authorised however it still has the same creativity and expression, despite lacking the illegality and politics that grafitti generally carries. The colours in the image are vibrant and changing. The frame of the shot is very effective as it contains very little negative space, the wall contrasts with the backdrop of either sides. When viewing this image, I decided to not to photoshop the image because I liked the original raw, natural feel of the shot.

In this image when editing this image, I turned up the contrast and made it black and white to add to the dramatic and rebellious nature of the content. The image is of a power box on the pavement covered in graffiti tags, stickers and art sheets, this is a more accurate reflection of youth culture in graffiti. The tone of this image is very varied and dark, as the darkest tone being the box and window frames in the backdrop, these contrasts really well against the lighter tones such as the pavement and stickers. The main subject being box is near enough in the centre therefore ones attention is first drawn to that. The depth of field is interesting because the backdrop is also in focus.

Progression: When shooting other images for youth culture, I will keep continuing to find the appeal and influences of different sub-cultures and the significance that they play in youth. So far I have managed to capture my shoots in varied environments showing a range of different reflections that location has to youth culture.
